San Jose Flea Market

Administration
The vendors at the Flea Market San Jose
The Flea Market of San Jose is still Family owned. Although currently employs 500 staff in the administration and controlled by Ogden Entertainment Services, oversees the entire family Bumb market management. Brian Bumb father, son of George Bumb Sr., now oversees and owns half (15.7%) of the flea market in San Jose with his brothers, George Bumb Jr., and Timothy Bumb, who each have 14.1% of the property. Other family members own suppliers Bumb jobs, work in food carts, and management have made flea market. Joe Bumb, Bumb Brian's cousin, owns American precious metals, an outdoor shop in the flea market which now sells mostly jewelry. Joe Bumb store total revenues approximately $ 100,000 per month. On any given Sunday, a visitor can find Joe and a handful of their children helps his father in the family store.

Attractions
A mariachi band playing in San Jose Flea Market
The eight miles (13 kilometers) to the value of corridors allows more than 2,000 vendors selling a wide range of products. With a population and land mass bigger than some small towns, the flea market is an important contributor to the income of many Silicon Valley families. Some of the treasures found in the benchmark include jewelry, furniture, clothing, fruits, vegetables, shoes, collectibles, toys, books, lamps, batteries, car stereo, paint, electric drills, lampshades, bars lips, and forks.
Along with footage items sold in the flea market, there are twenty food vendors. Restaurants selling burritos delight of French fries and freshly cooked meat on the barbecue outdoors in order to meet customer tastes great flea market served daily. Also There are carts of sandwiches for buyers in the race that offer delicious treats. Some of them include mango and pineapple spears a stick, cold drinks, and churros. Most of the flea market is Produce Row ranging from a quarter mile through the market and contains vegetables and fruit farmers in California.
The environment is like no other. To accompany the sweet and savory smells of food, is the constant sound of Music playing. Since the flea market attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities, the songs featured in the booths of vendors in the market reflect different tastes. Therefore, it is not surprising that a real band Mexican mariachi play as a song by the Beach Boys heard a few minutes. There is also a carousel, arcade, and three playgrounds for children.
The diversity of people, food, and music at the Flea Market San Jose represents the crucible in which Bay Area of California is proud.
School
To keep the family tradition of education in the Roman Catholic Church, Mr. George Bumb established the Saint Thomas More School in the property market fleas in 1978. His grandchildren were the first to attend school, but when St. Thomas More was transferred in 2004-1590 South White Road San Jose, CA, attendance increased to include students outside the Bumb family. Although no longer remains in the flea market grounds, Saint Thomas More School resided at the site of twenty-six, most of the life of the Flea Market.
Setbacks
Fraud and Theft
On Sunday, October 29, 1986, eight vendors at the Flea Market San Jose were arrested by undercover agents for the sale of counterfeit Cassette Tapes. Agents also seized 14 000 tapes from the stands. Sellers of these films were investigated after a 1984 study showed that the recording industry had lost more than $ 300 million in fake tapes. The tapes in a record store sold about $ 8 a tape, tapes at the flea market are selling for two for $ 5 or three for $ 6.
In January 1990, five men were arrested for stealing 38 Ford Trucks from the parking lot of the Flea Market in San Jose. The Fresno native men stole the cars to be sent south to the San Joaquin Valley, where you could sell. Parking at the Flea Market is so large that security did not realize that almost three cars were being stolen daily. But surveillance of the plot allowed authorities to capture suspected of stealing five cars.
In December 1990, ten vendors were arrested for selling fake designer watches, sports shoes and clothing. Counterfeit goods in 7000 worth an estimated $ 150,000 were seized by a San Francisco researcher who was working with the police in San Jose. At first of this investigation, the authorities bought 100 (Chanel, Fendi, Nike, Rolex, Adidas) imitations of 42 vendors. On the day of arrest, however, only 10 suppliers were false due to the rain outside.
In May 1993, eight vendors were arrested for selling fake baseball sports wear and $ 46,000 worth of clothing clothing were confiscated. Imitation of hats, shirts, and jackets were sold and more than $ 4,000 items were taken.
Child Labour
In June 1992 Flea Market Inc. was fined $ 68,700 for alleged child labor in the San Jose Flea Market. Researchers of child labor laws in San Jose claimed the Flea Market, 1415 71 children employed in a restaurant flea market for more than the federal standard time of 18 hours per week. The United States Department Labour also refers to this work so dangerous. Although the flea market in San Jose did not use the facts of the case, has denied the fines received. The Flea Market alleged that since they are not involved in interstate commerce, are subject to fewer state laws limit and not a part of the jurisdiction of the Federal Department of Labor.
Family Feud
In the late 1970s, problems began when the wife of George Bumb Sr. 's began having an affair with a man she met in a class square dance. face felony charges George Bumb father when he and an accomplice beat the man for 90 minutes. He offered $ 100,000 out of city. Bumb pleaded guilty to misdemeanors.
Throughout his career, George Bumb Sr. included eight children in the family business. He managed his business and family similarly stringent policies and fired their families frequently. A quieter family feud began when one of his sons, Brian Bumb Sr., did not send their children to school family, Saint Thomas More. Brian told his father, the world was bigger than the flea market, and your children explore.
The continuing Bumbs struggling families and businesses. In late 1990, the son of George Bumb Sr. 's Jeff spent $ 11.5 million to open bay 101, a games room in San Jose. But Jeff was not successful in obtaining a gaming license by the State on account of a loan that never paid. His two brothers, George Jr. and Tim Bumb, never intended to participate, but licensed the game for the Bay 101. So Jeff originally did not receive any money from the bay of 101 benefits. As a result, he asked his father for greater participation in the flea market for all the benefits of Bumb brothers' would be equal. Mr. Jeff George Bumb refused and therefore sued his family. The case settled for $ 5.8 million in 1996. George Bumb Mr. died soon after, never reconciled with his son Jeff.
Fire
On Tuesday, November 29, 2006, a fire burned stands 24 Production line at the flea market in San Jose. At 6:02 pm, a 911 call was made and dozens of firefighters and a helicopter arrived to put the flames. Although the fire was contained at 7:15 pm, for $ 200,000 of merchandise was destroyed. burnt nuts, fruits, plants and plastic scattered on the floor. Bumb Teresa, daughter of Brian Bumb Sr., said they will do everything possible to help those affected by fire offer free or reduced rent.
Future Developments
On August 14, 2007, San Jose City Council approved the proposal to rebuild the property of 120 acres (0.49 km2) in Berryessa Road to allow a 2,800-home development. The Council took public input and discussed among themselves for about two hours, which ended in approval of the motion of a 10-1 vote. The only vote of disapproval was launched by the Council members have felt the requirements of the city gave the Bumb family were excessive. The bill passed the Bumb family plan to develop the lot of 120 acres (0.49 km2) which is the current home of the San Jose Flea Market. The market will remain open until 2010, but meanwhile, a joint effort between the family and the city Bumb will be held to find a new place to house sellers. The approval of project would have certain advantages, other than an increase in the dwelling. The flea market location is also a future BART, Bay Area Rapid Transit, the site of the station. The advantage of building 2000 + low-income households around that station would be a positive effect on San Jose travelers.
The challenge is to find a replacement for the flea market. Some potential sites Singleton Road Landfill, the south end of Coyote Valley, the County Fairgrounds Santa Clara and Morgan Hill. Any that is the chosen site must be less than 80 hectares (320,000 m2) to accommodate the thousands of flea market vendors. With a recent increase in land values, finding a place as will be an expensive task.
